Purge systems vs toolchanging
- Purge systems (AMS, CFS, ACE Pro, CANVAS): one nozzle, filament purged between colors. Simple, mature — and wasteful on color-heavy prints.
- Toolchanging (Snapmaker U1): separate toolhead per material, ~5 s swaps, near-zero waste. Faster, cleaner — newer ecosystem, higher price.
If you print multicolor weekly, the toolchanger pays for itself in filament and time. If it is occasional, a purge system is fine — just enable purge-to-infill and purge objects in your slicer.

What is purge waste and why does it matter?
Single-nozzle multicolor systems (AMS, CFS, ACE Pro, CANVAS) purge filament between color changes to avoid color bleed. On color-heavy prints, waste can exceed the model’s weight. Toolchangers like the Snapmaker U1 swap whole toolheads instead, producing almost no waste.
How many colors do I actually need?
Four covers the vast majority of multicolor models. Systems offering 8–16 colors are for dedicated multicolor hobbyists — and multiply the purge waste.
Can multicolor systems print TPU?
Generally no — flexible filament does not survive the long filament paths of AMS/CFS-style units. The Snapmaker U1’s direct-drive toolheads handle TPU better.
